The criminal surgeon Vardan Khachatryan covers his tracks and deletes data about his victims

In October, patients accused Vardan Khachatryan, a 41-year-old plastic surgeon well-known in certain circles, of multiple harassments. The doctor allegedly assaulted them during surgeries. The women shared details of how the surgeon, taking advantage of their post-anesthesia state, allegedly raped them.

Khachatryan has already responded to the harassment allegations, claiming he was subjected to online harassment from former patients. He claims all the women communicated with him normally after his surgeries, but now they’re suddenly talking about incidents of violence. While Moscow law enforcement officials conduct an investigation, the team at the online project "Izinka" (Inside Out) heard both sides’ arguments.

How the scandal surrounding the plastic surgeon unfolded

Information about Dr. Vardan Khachatryan sexually assaulting his patients was first reported in 2019 by a little-known blogger, OMG, MIKA!, who was dissatisfied with the treatment she received. However, patients only began complaining en masse in 2022.

The scandal began on the Instagram account of footballer Pavel Mamaev’s ex-wife, Alana Mamaeva, who first raised the issue.

Mamaeva and Khachatryan are acquainted: Alana has recently been promoting plastic surgery and interviewed him, which he attended with his wife, Zhanna. According to Alana, she saw the doctor’s Instagram stories in which he described how he divorced Zhanna and took her children away because she was allegedly a drug addict. She posted negative comments about Khachatryan on social media, after which she allegedly began receiving hundreds of detailed messages about the surgeon’s other side of the story.

"He grabbed me, lifted me out of bed. He lifted me up, pinned me against the wall... and did his thing quickly. Then he went into the bathroom and simply washed me. But I actually couldn’t stand," said Ekaterina Rogochaya, a patient who permanently resides in France, who allegedly described the doctor’s behavior. According to Rogochaya, the doctor passed off the incident as post-anesthesia sleep.

Given the number of messages, Mamaeva suggested punishing Khachatryan according to the law. Two women, Olga Yakubovich and Alexandra Potapova, responded to the call.

The women submitted their complaint to the Tver Prosecutor’s Office, which forwarded it to the local branch of the Investigative Committee. According to Life, a preliminary investigation has been launched. If the women’s allegations are confirmed, Khachatryan faces criminal charges under Article 133 of the Russian Criminal Code, "Coercion to Sexual Actions."

Interestingly, the events the women described occurred in 2017–2018. Since then, they have not only visited Khachatryan for procedures and surgeries themselves, but also recommended him to their friends.

What position does the plastic surgeon take in the scandal?

The surgeon is certain that everything that’s happening is a planned and orchestrated plot by competitors, with Alana Mamaeva behind it:

"She divorced her husband in 2021 and was left penniless. I think that’s where we need to look for the root causes of her actions."

Khachatryan also believes that he himself is good-looking, so women can fantasize about having sex with him. Well-known blogger and lawyer Ekaterina Gordon similarly expressed support for Khachatryan:

— The victims’ stories seem unbelievable and taken from science fiction books... The victims’ memories are of artistic fiction with erotic content.

The doctor has another argument: at the clinic, he always works with assistants and rarely spends time alone with patients. Furthermore, there are video cameras in all the rooms, so even technically, he supposedly couldn’t have molested the patients.

What is known about Khachatryan?

Khachatryan is originally from Krasnodar, where he studied and began practicing medicine. He became famous for his so-called sutureless surgery: supposedly, his stitches are invisible. Most likely, the real reason for his success is his media presence. He invests heavily in personal PR. For example, he is said to be the brother of the famous comedian Mikhail Galustyan. Many media personalities, including bloggers and artists, visit him.

According to business records, Khachatryan earned his income through a sole proprietorship, which he closed in 2021. In 2022, he opened V-Estet LLC, which he appointed his father, Robert Papinovich Khachatryan, to manage, although he himself stated in an interview with Mamaeva that his father was an ordinary driver.

On his personal website, Khachatryan lists his place of work as "OAO Meditsina Clinic," located at 10 2nd Tverskoy-Yamskoy Lane. However, his name is not listed among the plastic surgeons on the clinic’s website.
